You will also be able to relax in our sauna and hot tub, and take romantic strolls hand-in-hand [but of course that's up to you!] along tranquil Lydstep beach or on the Pembrokeshire Coast National Walking Trail, which are both just a few minutes walk.

Tranquil Lydstep beach

It’s that time of year again – the post Christmas-blues when the realisation that the cheese, roast dinners, nuts, puddings, cakes, pies, wine, champagne…. Well, none of it was a bad idea at the time, but in the cold, crisp light of January it’s a different story.

But now the festivities and frolics are nearly over, it’s time to think about 2012 and  about a happier, healthier, and fitter year ahead!

So make New Year’s resolutions that will last with our expert health professionals, who can give you a relaxing break as well as a new you to take away. And find out at Celtic Haven why it’s not a cliché to find a new you in the New Year!

Iân Morris,Celtic Haven's private fitness instructor

We’ll be offering bespoke sessions with Iân Morris, our private fitness instructor who will tailor-make exercise and healthy living plans depending on each guest’s fitness levels. Those who are new to exercise will enjoy his ‘Gentle Gym’ sessions and exercise enthusiasts will be talked through achievable fitness goals and regimes for 2012. Hiker, blogger and tweeter Paul Steele [aka The Bald Hiker], paid us a visit in November with his two faithful Bassett Hounds. He explored all the wonderful walking Pembrokeshire has to offer, as well as taking in a few of the local sites – and Celtic Haven‘s Elemis spa and Waves restaurant of course!

Here are some of the highlights of his tweets, blogs and pictures -

Fancy a Christmas break where someone else organises the shopping, puts up the tinsel and Christmas tree and plans the Christmas party?

Make Christmas a real break this year and join us for the festive period at Celtic Haven in Pembrokeshire. Stay in a 12th century cottage, nestled in the heart of the Pembrokeshire Coast National Park, where you can have a personal service with the privacy of your own costal cottage.

The Manor House all snowy in winter 2010

Our friendly staff can help to make your home for Christmas as as festive as possible by decorating and putting up the Christmas tree before you arrive. They can also unpack and store away food which has been ordered online before arrival.

Complete the Christmas mood with fireworks, mulled wine, mince pies, a Santa event and gifts for all the children on Christmas Eve. There will also be special Christmas menus at Celtic Haven’s Italian influenced Waves Restaurant - except for Christmas Day and Boxing day when our staff are taking a well earned rest!

And with our Christmas break offer during December, you can save the pennies to spend on stocking fillers! Because for just £159pp for 3/4 nights in a luxury cottage you also get…

  • A £30 voucher to use in our Elemis ‘Premier Spa’
  • A FREE three course pre-Christmas lunch
  • Kids under 5 stay for FREE!
  • Christmas Eve Fireworks Party with mulled wine and mince pies.
There is something for the whole family at Celtic Haven with free use of its nine-hole headland golf course, indoor swimming pool, hot tub, sauna and all weather tennis courts. For a Christmas indulgence guests can book from over 80 treatments at the resort’s Elemis Premier Spa. The cottages also have direct access to the Pembrokeshire Coast National Trail for a post-turkey-dinner walk along the coastline with stunning headland views.

Celtic Haven’s 26 cottages of one to six bedrooms make for a cosy winter get away,  as many date back to the 12th century and retain historical elements such as beamed ceilings. It was originally the busy country estate of Lord St. David and each cottage has a characterful name, such as Servant’s Quarters, which relates to its original function. The cottages are decorated to luxury standards and have fully equipped kitchens.

And we can cater for the largest and most eclectic of families with babysitting for the young and qualified carers and NHS trained nurses for the elderly or those who need a little bit of extra care.

And the adventurous can join the nearby 41st Tenby Boxing Day Swim [featured on the new Tesco Christmas advert - Tenby in Tea!]. Where very brave swimmers take the plunge into the sea, in fancy dress, for charity. Even if you don’t fancy an icy dip this is an entertaining event only five minutes drive away always gets everyone in the holiday spirit.

There’s nothing worse – or more predictable – than getting to January with an almighty Christmas hangover.  The sluggish feeling of too many festive get-togethers, the tighter-than-they-should-be jeans and the battered immune system.

So we’ve put together some Celtic Haven top tips for pre-Christmas pampering and healthy living, Pembrokeshire style, to help you beat the post Christmas, winter blues.  So, prepare to detox, before you retox!  Now’s the perfect time to start to make sure you’re ahead of the game.

Swap comfort food for super food

Consider pre-toxing in the weeks up to Christmas to boost your immune system and prepare the body for any over-indulgence ahead. Studies suggest that supplements don’t have the same benefits as natural foods.  Be sure to eat plenty of leafy green vegetables and fruit for vitamin C.

Other tips include drinking at least two litres of water per day, keeping caffeine and alcohol to a minimum and sticking to raw foods, juices and soups wherever possible.  Why not stock up on frozen berries for smoothies – blackberries are some of the best when it comes to antioxidants.

Top up your vitamin D levels with cod-liver oil, milk, dairy products and oily fish such as sardines, salmon and fresh tuna.

Get match fit

The temptation as the nights draw in and the temperature drops is to hunker up on the sofa but there’s nothing like a spot of exercise to boost your general feeling of wellbeing.  It’s a great time of year to join a fitness centre, where you can work out whatever the weather.

Whether you choose to exercise in the fitness suite or dive into the indoor heated pool at Celtic Haven, squeeze some hours in now at the leisure club and you’ll be sure to squeeze into the little black dress for the Christmas do!

Swimming is great for the whole body, improving muscle strength, endurance and cardiovascular fitness as well as toning upper and lower body.  It’s really good for the heart and lungs.

And did you know that, on average, a swimmer can burn as many calories in an hour as a runner who runs six miles per hour?

Enjoy a round (on the golf course, not in the pub)

Lack of sunshine can have a dramatic effect on your mood. The days may be shorter but there’s nothing like getting out for a walk on a sunny winter’s day to make you feel more chipper and to grab some vitamin D, essential for strong bones.   Did you know that your body can create vitamin D from the action of the sun on your skin, even on a cloudy day?

AND the cold weather makes your body burn more calories just to keep warm, making any activity you do indulge in even more effective.

Why not hit the Celtic Haven golf course to get your fresh air fix?  A round of golf burns about 300 calories in a 150 pound (68 kg / 10 stone) individual who plays for one hour while carrying clubs. And it can be a great way to make new friends!

Make fitness fun

You don’t have to wait for Wimbledon to perfect your serve.  The all-weather tennis courts at Celtic Haven are open year round.  A great way to stay fit whilst socialising with friends and family.

Take time to discover what exercise is going to give you most pleasure, whether that’s golf, swimming or fitness classes.

Check out our Fitness Tips Of The Week in our Leisure News section.

Look after your skin

Rain, wind and central heating can all take their toll on your skin.  Some pre-Christmas pampering will prove just the ticket to make sure you’re looking radiant in time for the festivities.

Blood and lymph fluid naturally nourish your skin.  In the winter months, when you’re cold, blood flows less freely so you need to compensate by giving your skin extra protection and nourishment.

Indulge in the Exotic Moisture Dew 60-minute facial at the Celtic Haven Spa for a moisture boost or the Fruit Active Glow to stimulate a lifeless complexion.

Aromatherapy is a great mood booster.  For an all over body, ultimate spa experience, the The Aromatherm Capsule is the ideal way to rejuvenate from head to toe.  Our Aroma Energiser hydrotherapy treatment features a body steam using Elemis oils, a treatment aimed at warming the tissues and muscles, using essential oils which are absorbed through the skin and inhaled to relax and promote wellbeing.

If you’re tired of looking pale and wan, treat yourself to a St Tropez spray tan in time for the party season.

And if you follow the above tips, you’ll be raring to go, right into the New Year!

Much as we’re always sorry to see the end of summer, there’s a certain satisfaction when the final blackberries are fading from the hedgerows and the mornings and evenings have that chill in the air…because we can look forward to the roaring log fires, bracing walks and hearty casseroles that come with the change in the season!

And it’s quite possibly one of the best times to visit Pembrokeshire.  We’re blessed in the west with some of the finest, mild and sunny autumn days (of course, we also have our fair share of blustery, sou’ester days too, but that’s all part of the fun of it!).  There’s arguably nothing nicer than cosying up in an oak-beamed bar with a robust red and a nourishing roast after a yomp along the coast path in a force niner!

Here are some Celtic Haven suggestions for making the most of the wonderful Welsh west coast in autumn and winter.

Get out, whatever the weather

Whether you’re lucky enough to enjoy unseasonably warm days, when you can nurse a Brains outside the pub, or battening down the hatches in a hooly, there’s little more satisfying than earning your dinner with a hike.

We’re gifted with some of the most scenically stunning coastal walks in Great Britain and you can choose to tackle as much or as little of it during your time here.  These are just a few of the options available.

With 180 odd miles of Pembrokeshire coastal footpath to choose from, you might be wondering where on earth to start.  Right from your front door!  From Celtic Haven it’s easy to step right out so why not tackle the walk to Lydstep Point for starters.  This is mostly on the level, although it’s a steep scramble down if you want to go and see Lydstep Caves.

Fancy something a bit more challenging?  Then set your sights on St Govan’s Head, 14 ½ miles away.

In the opposite direction from Lydstep, Amroth marks the very start of the Pembrokeshire coast path.  A walk in this direction will take in Tenby and a picturesque woodland amble between there and Saundersfoot.  If the tide’s out it’s possible to walk along the beach from Saundersfoot all the way to Amroth.

There’s also a lovely circuit from nearby Manorbier, taking in the remote sandy bay of Swanlake (and a breeze at just three miles!)

Hole up in a cosy pub

You never need veer too far off a footpath to find a cosy pub.  There are plenty of lovely watering holes to choose from in and around Tenby.  Some of the best in the area include:

The Lydstep Tavern – new owners have revived this friendly local and you’re sure of a warm welcome.

The Castle Inn, Manorbier – cosy and friendly with a great selection of ales.

The Lifeboat Tavern, Tenby – a charming, old world pub with good food, real ales and an open fire.

The Five Arches Tavern, Tenby – the perfect spot to chow down on home-made steak and ale pie or a roast.

If you want to relive your childhood memories of pubs, head to The Sun Inn at St Florence for a picture postcard pub serving meals in a basket.

Last but by no means least, be sure to save time for a lazy Sunday lunch at Waves, roasted strip loin of prime Welsh beef, Yorkshire pudding and rich gravy…mmmmmmmmmmmmm.

Retreat indoors

Don’t be deterred or down-heartened by the less clement days…If it’s definitely an indoors rather than an outdoors day, then why not check out some of the following attractions.

With most activities you can think of – and many under cover – Heatherton World of Activities near Tenby is perfect for a rainy day.  Paintballing, treesurfing, bowling and archery to name but a few.

There’s also the Silent World Aquarium at Tenby, rather bizarrely housed in a converted chapel.  The founders opened their collection to the public in 1989, which now includes marine life from around the Pembrokeshire coast as well as creepy crawlies and reptiles.

Test your striking skills at the Phoenix Bowl at Milford Haven with a spot of ten pin bowling.  Or visit the Solva Woollen Mill at Haverfordwest, the oldest working Woollen Mill in Pembrokeshire and one of only two remaining in the county.  You can watch the looms at work and browse the gift shop.

Head along to the Tudor Merchant House at Tenby to see how our ancestors lived.  Kids can try on Tudor costumes and play with replica toys.  The house belonged to a middle class merchant who lived in it with his family and servants and traded from the room by the street entrance. (NB. Open Mar to Oct)

Unwind with some R&R at the spa

Of course, whilst there is an abundance of adventure to be found on our doorstep, you may decide not to venture too far, but instead indulge in some Pembrokeshire pampering, Celtic Haven style.  From facials to hydrotherapy and Aroma Energisers, you won’t have to drag your weary limbs far for some R&R (respite and recuperation from the elements!).

Opt for a Celtic Haven Half Day for £59 and enjoy two treatments from a list including a Celtic Haven Taster Facial, Holistic Well-being Back Massage, Aroma Energiser, Hydrotherapy Bath, Body Scrub, Jessica Mini Manicure and Jessica Mini Pedicure.

Or indulge in a Radiant Spa Day for £85 and enjoy an Exotic Lime & Ginger Salt Glow, Exotic Frangipani Wrap or an Exotic Coconut Milk Ritual Wrap.

All of the spa day and half day packages include lunch at Waves and use of the leisure facilities.

Philip Evans, chairman of Celtic Haven says: “Autumn is a fantastic time to visit Pembrokeshire – once the summer rush has ended, the sandy beaches and small coves become deserted and you can discover the region at your own pace.

“October is a particularly good time for bird watching and seeing new born seal pups out of Tenby Harbour, which is just 10 minutes away from our cottages.”

Calling all female golf fans! Celtic Haven are holding the first ever ‘Wales Festival of Ladies Golf’ in Pembrokeshire from 24 to 25 September.

Supported by beauty brand Elemis, our women’s only golf tournament sets out to change the perception that golf is a male dominated sport.

The tournament will take place on our own headland golf course, which is part of our luxury spa resort located just outside Tenby. Our course includes three championship holes (including two par five) and stunning views over Caldey Island and the Atlantic Ocean.

Players can sign up at www.celtichaven-golf.co.uk or on 01834 870000 and the entry fee is just £25. All participants will also be treated to a £50 Elemis beauty pack, a jazz pasta party on Saturday and a country music hog roast on Sunday followed by the awards ceremony.

And competitors can tee off in the hope of winning silver trophies or the ‘Festival Champion’ rosebowl plus over £1,000 in prizes. The golf simulator in the academy at Celtic Haven will allow the longest drive and nearest the ‘pin’ competitions to be at Pebble Beach in California and the Old Course at St. Andrew’s.

Women players will be supported by inspirational 18 year old Wales International Emma Guerreiro who has won the Junior Wales Open and was the Pembrokeshire County Champion in 2009. Emma is keen to make golf more available to women of all ages and has helped to introduce the popular Sport is Beauty and Cool Golf packages at Celtic Haven, making golf fun and feminine without losing the competitive edge.

Emma Guerreiro Wales International

Competitors and spectators are welcome to stay at Celtic Haven, and we have gorgeous self-catering cottages which sleep from two to 12 people, with bed and breakfast prices over the tournament weekend from £79 per person per night. And after a hard days golfing, players can relax in Celtic Haven’s indoor swimming pool, hot tub and sauna or book a treatment in the resort’s onsite luxury Elemis Premier Spa.

Ladies: want to know your ace from your albatross, your birdie from your bogey, and your divot from your driver?

Well here at Celtic Haven we’re starting a new, innovative women’s golf campaign for those inspired by the British Open Championship but lacking the confidence to try the game on their own.

Celtic Haven, a self-catering cottage resort on the Pembrokeshire coastline, has its own nine-hole golf course and in-house female golf pro to encourage women to enjoy a round as much as men.

The headland golf course has panoramic views over Caldey Island and the Atlantic Ocean and is available for all guests. No handicap is required, clubs are available free of charge and guests can benefit from the PGA approved golf simulator which has over 70 international courses and full training and driving range programmes.

Philip Evans, managing director of Celtic Haven, comments: “Golf is strongly stereotyped as a ‘man’s’ sport which completely pushes women’s golf to one side. We feel that Celtic Haven is an ideal environment for women to comfortably learn or improve on their golf and we have professional golf packages to aid them. The ethos at Celtic Haven is that sport is beauty and a round of golf can be tied in with a treatment at the resort’s spa and a dip in the hot tub.”

Celtic Haven’s flexible four-day golf package allows women to play golf all day or just for a couple of hours. The package includes an induction and three hour golf lesson with a PGA professional, unlimited play on the Celtic Haven golf course and a round at Tenby’s Championship Course.

Welsh International, Emma Guerreiro

Additionally, Welsh International, Emma Guerreiro, who heads up female golf at Celtic Haven, is always on hand for extra tuition and support. Novices receive a ‘fit for course’ certificate and experienced players can benefit from discount rates at local courses.

After a hard day's work on golf course, relax with at the Elemis spa...

Golfers can also use Celtic Haven’s fitness suite, tennis courts, indoor swimming pool, hot tub and sauna and receive ten per cent off treatments at its Elemis Premier Spa. The package costs £495 including four nights accommodation in a luxury cottage, continental breakfast delivered to the cottage each morning and lunch or dinner at Celtic Haven’s Waves restaurant .

To celebrate this initiative Celtic Haven is also holding the first ‘Welsh Festival of Ladies Golf’ from 24 to 25 September 2011. The event will be held in association with award winning beauty brand, Elemis, which will generously treat all players to a £50 Elemis beauty pack. This partnership will help support golf as a feminine activity, which can be enjoyed by women of all ages. Entry is £25. Players can enter at www.celtichaven-golf.co.uk

For bookings, call 01834 870000 or visit Celtic Haven’s website
